Vintage Fashion

22 Jun

Nicola from Daffodil Waves Photography did an amazing recent photo shoot! I loved the retro feel to these images, for those of you who are lovers of vintage (or not… but appreciate good fashion pictures) you’re in for a treat! The dresses were all lovely Vivien of Holloway dresses, which gave the shoot that little extra spark of magic. This has go to be one of my favorite vintage shoots to date!

Really love this photographer’s work, she’s flying up the ranks super quick! For more of this fabulous vintage shoot, head on over to her blog Daffodil Waves Blog.

Eniko Mihalik

26 May

Fashion Loving loves to appreciate everything about fashion and oh yes Eniko Mihalik is right up there. The Hungarian model is an absolute beauty and her modeling is exceptional! She has been in some of the most amazing fashion shows and her photo shoots are awesome. Most recently you can find her in a beauty spread for the June/ July 2011 issue of Vogue Paris. The spread is about tanning and was shot by Giampaolo Sgura, doesn’t she just look hot!!

This is one sought after model, just this year alone she has graced the pages of Vogue Italia, W Magazine, Haper’s Bazaar and many more not to mention her ad campaigns. There’s just one simple reason why she is everywhere… this lady is just great at what she does and I most certainly love her to bits.

Check out the gallery for some more recent photo shoots!

Do you love Eniko Mihalik or what?

Karmen Pedaru outlandish shoot for Vogue Nippon

24 May

I adore over the top photo shoots, just trying to work out how someone came up with the initial creative always gets me thinking. The fabulous Giampaolo Sgura made over the top and crazy look beautiful, of course the model Karmen Pedaru had a lot do with it too! The shoot graced the pages of Vogue Nippon, ooh get a look at it below!!

Not only did the photos look great, the clothes looked stunning too, my favourite look is the first photo, which is Gucci spring collection. The model looks great and the whole concept for the shot is equally as great. ( In case you haven’t noticed, I do have a soft spot for photo shoots 😉 )

Tell me, what do you find most intriguing from this awesome shoot?

The Met Ball 2011 Fashion

4 May

One of the most important fashion nights happened this week at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute gala ball in NYC, where the genius designer Alexander McQueen was honored! His masterpieces were being exhibited, so there were only a few Mcqueen creations on hand for the red carpet fashions.

If your one of these people that enjoy the red carpet fashions (I am!) then the fashions that were on this red carpet will probably, most likely blow your mind! I found myself oohing and aahing at the outfits of the night, there so many delicious outfits out there. But the following outfits really stood out in my eyes..

For me, Sarah Jessica Parker looked exquisite in Alexander McQueen Autumn 2005 collection. The figure hugging dress fit her so well. Yes this is why she graces the best dress title, oh so often, just SO stylish!

The red carpet was showered with various other designers. Below Madonna was wearing Stella McCartney and I loved this vintage 1930s look. It was something very different to what I am used to Madonna wearing, so it was a pleasant surprise!

Another favorite of mine was Blake Lively! Karl Lagergfeld dressed this beauty to perfection in a lovely couture Chanel dress. The dress really showed her awesome body off to the upmost. Wouldn’t you agree?

Now, I love this next dress that Ginnifer Goodwin wore simply for the fact that the dress held it’s own out of the couture gowns on the red carpet. The gown is from Topshop Unique!! Yes, I know what you’re thinking because I thought that too! Love the colour and I think she looked stunning. What do you think?

Here’s a few more photos to add to the awesome looking A-listers!

What do you think of these lovely red carpet fashions?

FL♥ Thursday Loves – Paul Smith Spring

21 Apr

Paul Smith ready to wear spring 2011 collection was a delight to see. Paul Smith is a world renowned British designer whom I love, he is known for his menswear inspired looks for womenswear collections and he did not fail to deliver.

The lines in the collection were so simple and clean and brought out the chic girl on that runway. I must say everything that was presented worked so well together from the well tailored trousers to the pops of colours that can be seen throughout each look. It was a strong collection that had an essential underlying femininty that for me, helped bring a sense of fun and drama, which ultimately kept me interested and had me on the edge of my sit looking forward to the next look I would see.

Within the menswear pieces the trousers just stopped shy of the ankles (a trend that we are seeing a lot for the spring and summer) it is such a flattering cut for trousers and only added to the feminity that binds the whole collection. Interesting sparks of real innovation and creativity made for pleasant surprises like the strips of colour and polka dots above the hem of the trousers, adding something fresh to menswear pieces.

The colour pallet of the collection was unqestionably perfect and was one of the reasons the collection was so strong and beautiful. Colours ranged from purples, deep greens, navys to brighter colours such as orange and yellows. The collection also featured some pretty chic polka dot and stripe prints! All the colours complemented each other perfectly. Most outfits were light and screamed that this was a spring/ summer collection. But even if the outfit was predominately dark there was always a pop of colour in the form of an accessory. Like this purple outfit with the belt providing that much needed colour pop of neon (above).

One of the most eye catching aspects of this collection which admittedly made me squeal in excitement occasionally were the addition of the accessories from the silk polka dotted pocket squares to handbags that had a just the right amount of a splash of colour. These little extras enhanced the overall looks and only sold the outfit to me more.

Makeup was simple with nude and neutral tones being used so as not to take anything away from the impact that the clothes were making. The large backcombed quiffs hairstyles with the slick backed sides only added to the sense of drama on the runway, it really gave a sense that the clothes were made for the cool chic uptown girl.

I could really see the usual stamp of the Paul Smith design in this collection, there was impressive femininty in the tailoring of the menswear pieces. Even more impressive was the use of prints not just in the menswear inspired lookes but in the chiffon sheer dresses that floated down the runway beautifully. The bold colours of shirt dresses and accessoried really added to the excitement of the collection. Overall the collection certainly showed that this is Paul Smith’s expertise, its rare to find such femininty and softness in menswear inspred looks, but this collection was made to look effortless and chic.

FL♥ Thursday Loves – Dot to Polka Dots

14 Apr

This spring/ summer season sees the return of the Polka Dots, and I am loving them. I think polka dots are really versatile, it’s a print that works for any occasion. Designers have really re-invented the polka dot and have taken it to new heights.

This Oscar de La Renta dress is absolutely stunning and a stand out evening piece for all the right reasons. It looks really chic and sophisticated but never too much for the eye. The designer that I had the most fun looking through the collection was Marc Jacobs. The spring/ summer 2011 ready to wear collection was full of stripes and polka dots, the designs brought a fresh new perspective on polka dots and for me, made it really fun and exciting to see each different piece of the collection.

What I love about this Marc Jacob creation is the Polka Dot meets retro style. I love this retro 70s colourful print incorporated into the polka dot, I think it’s really innovative and makes for a stunning dress, it certainly brought a smile to my face!

You can find polka dots in all sizes, from very tiny dots to larger dots. There’s a dot size for every shape, figure, personality out there. I love big whopper dots, nothing like making a statement 🙂 I love the fact that they are also not limited to your clothes, there on shoes, bags and many other accessories. It’s a fun trend and there are plenty of ways your can incorporate the polka dot into your outfits, they look stylish!

Will you be wearing a dot or two for spring/ summer?

Haute Couture… Yes please!!

23 Mar

I just wanted to share with you some of my favorite looks from the Christian Dior Haute Couture Spring 2011 collection. I really loved the colours that were used in this collection from the vibrant red used in the opening looks to the serene pastel colours used later in the show.

I really like the vintage references in the collection it makes the collection look classic and timeless. It is a couture collection that is more wearable than most but it looks flipping gorgeous!!

The styling of this collection was also one of my favorites; simply because of the retro hair styles and makeup (but with a modern twist of course), which I thought perfectly complimented the outfits and gave the collection an overall perfect chic feel. I could really see myself wearing these looks!!

Pretty, aren’t they??

Awesome Photographer

14 Mar

Last week was a really hectic week but also quite fun. I went along with my friend (who is a photographer) to the NEC for the Focus on Imaging exhibition, it’s always quite fun to see how much stuff goes into making a really cool picture and seeing the gallerys of very talented photographers. But the best part of the afternoon was getting to see John Wright talk about photography in general and then getting to meet him afterwards!

I have been a fan of his photography for a while now and it was really nice meeting a nice and down to earth individual. He had nothing but good advice to give to my friend and I know she was so stoked to be having a conversation with him.

John Wright is known for his photography of the stars, he’s shot the likes of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Cheryl Cole and many more.

He also does fashion photography aswell and it was great to find out some of the techniques he uses to create some wonderful images (although I didn’t quite understand it all, but I am not a photgrapher afterall).

It was a really great informative experience and a chance to look at some awesome pictures at the same time.

Hats – Can we have more please?

11 Mar

After having a marathon FIVE long days of bad hair days (hairdressers this weekend yay!)… I thought I’d tell you my love of hats and how they have been my recent saviour. My little rescue remedy also seems to be a the ‘thing’ to wear and it certainly looks trendy, I say.

Lily Cole from Elle Starstyle

Believe it or not about a year ago you would not have seen me in a hat, for some reason I thought hats and I do not gel. But I slowly started a collection of hats that I felt really comfortable in and went with my many whacky outfits I like to put together (occassionally).

What I love about my hats are that they can contribute to so many different kind of looks whether it’s vintage, rock or hippy (to name a few). I love having items that are versatile and can contribute to my different styles depending on what mood I am in. I love putting my trilby on and accesorizing with a sachel bag to rock the vintage look. But you can see (above) Lily cole rocks the ‘trilby’ hat and makes it look rock chic. Definitely going to try this look!!

Look at a partial collection of my hats, I haven’t took any pictures of me with my awesome hats on….. (I thought I’d wait until my hair looked a little better).

Some of these hats are vintage, but I have added to my collection recently, a good place for hats on the high street that I recommend is Topshop. They are also not all Trilby hats although the Trilby is by far my favorite!!

What’s your favorite accessory?

FL♥ Thursday Loves – The maxi-licious 2011 trend

10 Mar

I was going through my wardrobe today and realised I haven’t bought a skirt in aaages. Generally I’m a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl. Now that the weather is changing and becoming (semi) sunny, I am starting to see everyone’s skirts come out of hiding and it got me thinking what skirt would I like to wear…

I find the maxi skirt scrumptilicious!! The maxi dress/ skirt has surfaced as one of the spring/summer trends in the last couple of years.. but it has resurfaced again for one of the trends for spring/summer 2011 and I couldn’t be happier.

Alexander McQueen Spring Ready to Wear Collection 2011

I find that a maxi can be so chic and trendy… it is also a great way to be sexy without having to reveal much skin, its an understated way to look the part for summer. I think it’s absolutely essential to get a maxi skirt/ dress that suits your figure as some are more flattering on different figures.

I have first hand experience in this as I must admit I have tried to buy a maxi before but found it didn’t quite suit me. But perserverance is the key, and after finding these awesome looks, I am jumping back on the search wagon!

But there’s a maxi out there for everyone…. and I shall definitely be adding this to my summer looks.

This is my favorite maxi look. I love the layering of the skirt paired with this awesome crop top. Definitely chic and trendy all in one!

lookbook.nu

I adore this vintage maxi look. The colour of this dress is amazing and it just goes to show that a simple look can blow you away. I do happen to think the floppy hat takes this look to a whole other level.

popcultureafternoon.blogspot.com

Another stunning maxi…

The maxi is a must have to add (if you have not already got one)  to your collection of clothes and it is something that I will be doing… oh in about 10 seconds after this post.

What is your favourite summer piece?

Megan Fox Armani Advert

8 Mar

Well I think I am going to start some posts dedicated to my favourite fashion ads I see… To start the ball rolling, I’m quite impressed with this Megan Fox armani advert. I absolutely adore the stills from the advert, it’s quite good. There’s just something about black and white photography/adverts that I really like, you can’t go wrong really.

What are your thoughts on Megan Fox?

Rocket Heels?!!

7 Mar

Over the last couple of weeks, I have been getting my fix on all the award shows going around. Whether it was watching the celebrities at the Brits, Grammys or the Oscars, there was one thing I noticed amongst the lovely dresses and perfect hair and makeup… WOWZER, those heels are huuuge.

Oh my days have you seen what they wear these days??, if you haven’t I have more examples don’t worry.

Don’t get me wrong I absolutley love shoes (it’s my joy in life to buy them) but I just look at all of these celebs and models and just think they’re being made to earn their money by walking in some of these Sky High Heels!!

Seriously, I brought a pair of shoes from Kurt Geiger a couple of months ago… they looked sooo awesome, if memory serves me right, they had a 5.5 inch heel. Needless to say I happily put these on and went to walk to the mirror to have a look at my fab looking new shoes (I do this everytime I get a new pair.. I just get excited. Can’t be helped!). Well… I couldn’t walk…..with all my might I could just about stand!!!

It somewhat surprised me I kept thinking “Well, I can definitely walk in 4inches… what difference does an inch and half make” It makes all the difference in the world (for me that is) and I am sad to say that I had to say ‘bye bye’ to the lovely shoes as they were returned back to the shop *brings tears to my eyes just recalling it*. It makes me chuckle as some of these celebrities and models are wearing 6inch heels and above…. I bow down and applaud them. No matter how good these lovely shoes look and let me to tell you I really really want them. I just haven’t found a way to wear them ….yet(maybe some day)

How do you feel about Sky High Rocket Heels? Yay or Nay?

What’s your favourite Colour?

6 Mar

As I was sitting in bed thinking what my next blog post would be about I was staring at my current favourite pair of trousers (it changes of often) and I was thinking why do I like them…. the answer is because of the colour!! Colour is one of the trends that I am absolutley loving for spring 2011, I love the splash of colour that everyone is bringing to the table.

Gucci Spring 2011 Collection Picture

(This beautiful ensemble designed by Gucci is an absolutely stunning use of colour…)

I always love wearing different mixes of colours. I think it definitely shows your own sense of fashion, but it also makes you pop out from the masses.Well my favourite trousers aren’t really a loud colour but I like them take a look.

Red Colour Trousers Worn by Toni May

This burgundy colour is my fave, because I can pair it with so many different colours to make different funky looks. In the picture above… I’m going for a casual look big slouchy grey top and a pair of black converse, just my lounge around the house look.

I’ve recently slapped on a pair of purple heels with these trousers and a green jacket. The look was  ‘smart enough to go out at night and socialise with some friends’ but still very different to what I saw other people wearing.

That’s why I like colour… it’s just another way to express your individual personal style. Check out some more images of clothes in my favourite colour.

Nicole Richie in Paris

5 Mar

When I think of Nicole Richie’s style I normally think Boho chic…with really cool accessories from her accessory line. Below we see a different side of Nicole Richie. It’s quite chic, if I must say so myself and Paris is the perfect place to rock this look.

(I love it when we see celebrities in town for Paris Fashion week, I feel like its the Fashion week where everyone steps it up a notch)

I like everything from her chanel purse down to her sky high Louboutins, the only thing I would say is that I would have preferred her to have worn  more sheer tights just cos…. But that’s my preference and I suppose if I could look this then I could probably comment more haha.

What do you think of this look?

Toni
